Yellow-Bellied Flycatcher
Empidonax flaviventris
DescriptionA rare migrant in California, the Yellow-bellied Flycatcher feeds on insects, berries, and seeds. Insects are either snatched from the air or gleaned from vegetation.
Brownish-olive upperparts. Yellowish throat, belly and undertail coverts. Olive wash on breast. They have more yellowish underparts in Fall than Spring. White eyering. Dark upper mandible, orangish lower mandible. Two whitish-buff wing bars. Triangular head. Sexes similar. 4.5 to 5.5 inches in length.
Thickets in coniferous forests. Especially fond of damp areas.
Nesting3-4 whitish eggs with brown spots. The eggs have a 12-13 day incubation period. Fledging occurs in 13-14 days. The nest is an open cup of moss and rootlets built on the ground.
