Western Bluebird Sialia mexicana
Western Bluebirds feast on a variety of invertebrates, including caterpillars, grasshoppers, beetles, ants, and snails. In winter, their diet includes wild berries.
General: 6.5-7inches in length.
Male: Bright blue upperparts and throat. Brownish back patch. Rusty orange-red breast and flanks. Gray belly and undertail coverts.
Female: Brownish-gray head and back. Blue wings and tail, which are duller than on male. Gray throat, belly, and undertail coverts. Dull brown-chestnut was on breast and flanks.
Juveniles: Duller than adult males and have spotted underparts.
Open woodlands, farms, pastures.
4-6 pale blue eggs. The eggs have a 13-14 day incubation period. Fledging occurs in 19-22 days. The nest is made from grass and built in a tree cavity or woodpecker hole.
