DescriptionSteller's Jays have the most extensive range of all North American Jays and can be found through most of the western and central United States. Known for its scavenging of food from human campsites, this bird normally feeds on nuts, fruit, seeds, and insects.
Dark blue body. Black head, crest, and upper breast. Secondaries and tail have black bars. Lightly streaked eyebrows. Black legs. Large, black bill. Sexes similar. 11 to 13 inches in length.
Coniferous forests, mixed oak woods, and parks.
Nesting3-5 greenish eggs with spots and a 16 day incubation period. Fledging occurs in ? days. The nest is a bowl made from twigs and lined with small roots and fibers. The nests are usually built in coniferous trees.
