Red-Crowned Parrot

DescriptionThe Red-Crowned Parrot gathers and feeds in large noisy flocks (mornings and evenings being noisiest). These birds feed on seeds, fruits, berries, flowers and nectar. Often moves in one screeching flock from one feeding location to another. Flies with rapid wing-beats.
Green plumage. Red lores, forehead, and crown. Violet-blue nape. Pale-yellow bill. Yellowish-orange eye. Pale greenish-gray legs. Immature similar to adult, except only lores and forehead are red. Sexes similar. 11.8 to 12.9 inches in length.
Arid tropical lowlands, dry open pine-oak ridges, and tropical deciduous forests. Suburban areas with mature trees, riparian areas, and parks.
Nesting2-3 white eggs with dark brown spots. The eggs have a 26 day incubation period. Fledging occurs in 68 days. The nest is a natural cavity, such as an old wookpecker hole in a palm tree.
