Heermanns Gull Larus heermanni
These gulls are distinctly different from the others in San Diego. Most gulls migrate north to nest and then return south. The Heermanns gull, however, nests in the Gulf of California and then migrates north (to San Diego). These fisherman have a high pitched see-whee song.
This gull has a distinctly orange beak. Its crown is light gray/white with spots and blends into a grayish chest, flank, and belly. Its back and wings are black, while its upper tail coverts have white tips and its legs and feet are black. 17 inches in length.

2-3 eggs with a 28 day incubation period. Fledging occurs ? days after hatching. Nest's in large colonies on islands in the Gulf of California.
