Ash-Throated Flycatcher
Myiarchus cinerascens
DescriptionThis is the only North American flycatcher to nest in a cavity. As with other flycatchers, this bird swoops down and catches insects from a high perch.
Olive or dull brown upperparts. Pale yellow belly. Pale gray throat and breast. Long, rusty brown tail. Pale wing bars. Fluffy crown. Thin black bill. Sexes similar. 7 to 8 inches in length.
Open woodlands, mountains, and desert.
Nesting4-5 creamy-white eggs with brown spots. The eggs have a 15 day incubation period. Fledging occurs in 14-16 days. The nest is built in a tree or cactus cavity and is usually lined with mammal fur. Often uses woodpecker holes.
